Jade Howe
Psychotherapist in Advanced Training
I’m Jade. I’m a Trainee Psychotherapist currently in the final year of an advanced four-year training program, which is equivalent to a Masters degree. I imagine looking for a therapist can feel quite confusing. There are many types of psychotherapy and therapists often have letters after their names that may not be familiar to you. It is important to find the right therapist for you because one of the strongest indicators of success in therapy is the relationship between therapist and client.

So let me tell you a little more about me then... I hold a First Class Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Psychology and I also work as an Associate Lecturer in Psychology and Counselling at the Open University; where I teach across a variety of undergraduate courses. My psychotherapy training is with the UKCP, which stands for the United Kingdom Council of Psychotherapists. UKCP are the leading organisation for Psychotherapists in the UK. This means I adhere to their high ethical standards, and I undergo their high standards of training and practice.

I have a lot of experience working in this field. I spent many years working as an Independent Mental Health Advocate; supporting people from diverse backgrounds, in a range of settings; to ensure that their voices were being heard and their legal rights were being protected. This was an enormous privilege and has developed not only my experience in listening with curiosity, empathy and compassion; but gave me valuable insights into the challenges within the mental health system.

How I work...
I work relationally and integratively.
What does relationally mean?

Working relationally means that relationship, is at the core of the work we do together. We are born in relationship. We need to attach to a primary caregiver to survive. We are nurtured through relationship. We cannot live without relationship. And so, when our relational needs have not been repeatedly met, we develop ways of adapting to this insecurity.

These enduring, relational patterns don’t always serve us, but continue to play out in our everyday relationships with others. I believe that the challenges or issues that bring clients to therapy are always about relationship, whether this be with ourselves, or with others.
This means that I am interested in how you relate to me, and how we relate to one another. I am interested in how our past experiences might impact on our current relationship, which gives us clues into how we are in the world and how we experience life.

What does Integrative mean?

To me, integrative means two main things. Firstly, that I combine (Integrate) different approaches to inform the work we do together. This doesn’t mean I have different ‘tools’ in my ‘toolbox’. I don’t work in this way. I will not tell you what I think you should do or give you ‘tools and techniques’ to temporarily ease your struggles. This is because I believe it is you, who knows ‘the answers’, so I respond to you in a way that respects the uniqueness of who you are and your personal lived experiences. This encourages you to make contact with your own intuition and power and make ever-lasting changes, rather than makeshift ones.
My second position on the term Integrative is that I believe we often arrive into therapy as ‘not-a-wholly-integrated-version-of-ourselves’. Think about a whole pie… and that pie represents all of who we are. We likely arrive into therapy, having contact with only a few pieces of that pie. There may be parts of ourselves we’ve had to mute, disown, or reject. There may be parts of ourselves, that we (or somebody else) have eaten… And I believe this often originates from past relationships. Usually, we’ve had to reject parts of who we are, in order to survive in the world. My hope is that the work we do together will support you in making contact with all parts of yourself, including those parts that have been previously denied.

Through working with me, it is possible to feel a sense of wholeness and solidity, in yourself. You get access to your whole, pie. And it’s any flavour, you want it to be.

Through working with me, it is possible to live your life with more comfort, ease and choice.

This might all sound a little complex. That is because, it is! But I take care of the complexities – that’s my job.
And I love my job! All you have to do, is arrive.
